U.S. thespian and writer Jeremy O Harris, best known for the Tony-nominated production Slave Play, was taken into custody in November at an airport in Japan on suspicion of attempting to smuggle controlled substances into the country, officials announced.

The 36-year-old was intercepted on 16 November at Naha airport, situated in Okinawa, after a customs officer discovered 0.78 grams of a crystal material containing the designer drug MDMA in his personal bag, according to a customs spokesperson.

He was immediately arrested on suspicion of breaching Japan’s strict Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Act.

Local customs officials lodged a formal complaint with the public prosecutor to initiate formal charging proceedings against the playwright.

A police official in Tomigusuku, Okinawa, verified that Harris remains in custody. The official did not elaborate on whether Harris has acknowledged the allegations.
