Manchester United Set to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants

Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Acquisition for United

Schüller, who has six months left on her deal, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL side.

Departure from Bayern has been anticipated since she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top strikers. According to reports, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.

Reliable Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line

The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a significant uplift to the team's attacking options. She has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • For seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Carrington

Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering momentum.

Their recent performances feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional business:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure stated: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having arrived from a club in the American league, said: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
