Milei Statuette, Any Takers? Meloni to Auction Off International Gifts for Charity
Passing on unwanted gifts might be viewed as somewhat rude – unless it's done for a noble purpose.
A Charitable Sale
The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell an estimated 270 items bestowed upon her by world leaders during her travels. The diverse haul reportedly features gifts including a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.
The presents, combined, have an approximate value of €800,000. They are scheduled to be auctioned off in a public auction by a Rome-based fine art auction house. The specific date has not been finalized, although the goal is to hold the auction by year's end, with the proceeds benefiting various charities.
Storage Room Collection
These gifts are said to be stored in a repository on the upper level of Palazzo Chigi. It has been reported that Meloni furthermore planning to auction off gifts given to her preceding prime ministers that have been sitting unused over a long period.
The full gift list remains officially released, but a glimpse were revealed earlier this year when an 11-page list of official presents was presented in parliament. The question raised if a legal value limit was being followed. By law, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents valued above €300.
An International Assortment of Gifts
The collection includes:
- A woven wrap from the leader of Albania, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A traditional Kerala dress from the Indian leader.
- A box of jewellery from the president of Slovakia.
- A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
- A electronic pad from the Ukrainian president.
- Paintings from the Moldovan government.
- An assortment including makeup, a skateboard, and several rugs received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Maybe the most unusual gifts were the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," observers have said.
Diplomatic Context
Supporters have applauded Meloni, particularly from her own political sphere, with garnering support from global statesmen and re-establishing Italy as a prominent force on the international platform once again.
The forthcoming sale highlights a distinct method to handle the diplomatic artifacts that build up during a political career.
