Putin Assures Steady Oil Shipments to India in Defiance of American Pressure

In a defiant statement to the United States, Leader Vladimir Putin stated to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia is prepared to maintain “unbroken” deliveries of energy resources to India. This declaration came during a summit where both heads of state met in the Indian capital and declared their relationship were “resistant to foreign coercion.”

A Message For the Western Countries

This affirmation, issued after the annual summit, was widely seen to be a direct challenge at Washington, who have tried to urge New Delhi into curtailing its historical links with Moscow. The context is in response to recent US actions, such as the introduction of trade penalties targeting New Delhi due to its purchase of discounted Russian crude.

“Moscow remains a reliable source of energy resources and anything necessary for the growth of India’s economy,” the Russian president stated. “Russia is prepared to persist in securing the steady delivery of energy for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”

Modi, though he did not naming energy directly, echoed the theme by noting that “a stable energy base has been a key and important pillar of the Indo-Russian alliance.”

Questioning Washington's Stance

Prior to the summit, in a TV appearance, Putin had criticized US interference over India's dealings with Russia. He argued, “If the US has the right to buy our nuclear fuel, why shouldn’t India claim the same privilege?”

Putin's arrival represented his initial journey to India following the beginning of the war in Ukraine, and Moscow and Delhi made a deliberate show to demonstrate that the personal rapport between the heads of state persisted strongly.

An Unusual Reception

In a notable step, the Indian PM personally greeted Putin upon his arrival. The two exchanged a hearty embrace like old friends before enjoying a one-on-one meal together.

Modi in his statement called India's relationship with Russia as “a guiding star” and added it was “founded on reciprocal esteem and profound confidence.”

Reaffirming Strategic Ties

The bilateral summit resulted in a number of significant pacts in the fields of military and trade relations. A major outcome was the completion of an economic cooperation programme that runs to 2030, which targets to increase twofold commerce to a hundred billion USD each year by the end of the decade.

Additionally agreed to recalibrate their strategic cooperation. Although Russia remains India's primary exporter of weapons, this role has diminished lately as India has sought widen its procurement.

Their communique highlighted cooperation in the co-development of cutting-edge military systems, though direct mention of deals for the Sukhoi Su-57 were not made.

In conclusion, Russia and India affirmed that during the “ongoing challenging, strained, and uncertain global landscape, Russian-Indian ties continue to be strong to external pressure.”
