Edwards and O'Neil represent the initial candidates in the frame to replace Vitor Pereira as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was dismissed on Sunday following the team's ten-game winless start to the top-flight season.
And Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have previous links to the team - are part of the names to be considered by the Wolves ownership.
Edwards is presently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a potential obstacle to his hiring at Wolves' stadium.
However the former Luton Town head coach - who played over a century of appearances for the club during his time as a player - is considered a strong contender for the position.
The 42-year-old is said to have backing from the Wolves board as they start the search of appointing a fresh head coach.
O'Neil is also appearing as a surprise contender, even though he would be a shock choice considering he was released by Wolves in December last year.
The former West Ham player is currently unemployed meaning Wolves would not need to pay any compensation.
