An informant has told a parliamentary probe that the UK failed to secure classified technology enabling Afghanistan's rulers to locate local individuals that had served with allied troops.

Information Leak Puts Numerous in Danger

The source, identified as Person A, testified that Afghans affected by the security lapse were told to relocate and switch their contact details to ensure their safety from the Taliban.

Members of Parliament are investigating official management of a serious disclosure of personal details involving approximately 19k Afghans who had requested to come to the United Kingdom to escape the Taliban.

The Information Breach Happened

A spreadsheet with their personal data, comprising names, addresses and in some cases family information, was inadvertently disclosed by a worker working at special operations center in early 2022.

The breach became known in late 2023, when details of multiple applicants who had applied to relocate to Britain surfaced on Facebook.

Under inquiry about whether the Taliban possessed necessary encryption, the whistleblower stated: “They have complete capability.”

Consequences of the Information Leak

Early investigations submitted to the inquiry indicated that at least 49 kin and colleagues of individuals impacted by the breach had been murdered.

A legal restriction concerning the leak was put in force in late 2023 and restricted any information regarding the matter from media reporting until recently.

Protective Actions

Because she was restricted, the whistleblower and the non-governmental organization she collaborated with told Afghan families they were supporting that they had “suspicions that certain devices had been intercepted”.

“Our suggestion was that they moved when possible and switched their phone numbers. That constituted the two main details that, if the Taliban obtained such data, would result in them being traced,” the source testified.

Challenged Assessments

Person A contested that internal investigation carried out by a former official had been mistaken to determine that the possession of the records by militant forces was “unlikely to substantially change an individual's existing exposure”.

“The important fact is that affected people are not confronting militant forces; they remain concealed. Everything boils down to former occupations.”

She detailed disturbing violence endured by at-risk Afghans, comprising electric shock torture, waterboarding, and severe beatings.

“There are cases of young kids who have had limbs fractured to force households to reveal locations,” the whistleblower revealed.
