For much of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive within a psychic prison constructed from the recollections of Vecna. Their mission for a way out in "Escape from Camazotz" has them witness again a traumatic incident from Henry's childhood—an event that may just hold the secret to his downfall for good.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft

After locating Max in the psychic realm dubbed Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a cave that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a telescope found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies not within the cave. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a deep mine shaft.

There, they witness a Henry as a boy come across an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the trauma went deeper than a simple act of survival.

In keeping with mysteries in volume 2, the full story behind the mine shaft incident originates in the stage play The First Shadow.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

The play reveals the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a vessel into a realm later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the captain, who returned in a unresponsive state with an altered blood type.

That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker stole research materials to hand over to the Russian agents, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. That traitor in the cavern is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Based on what is revealed about Brenner's work, the case most likely held vials of the altered blood. In the scene, Henry is already bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, causing the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would later pass on to the children under Brenner's care.

A second theory, the container could have held dark matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. The stage play explains that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, coming back hours later fundamentally changed. As a youth, he fights the whispers of a sinister presence, reminiscent of how Will was possessed by the entity in season 2.

Confronting Terror

The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory shows how deeply scarring the event was for him. While he orchestrates the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his personal demons to fortify himself.

Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what the monster's own weakness, and this may grant a decisive edge in the ultimate battle that awaits.
