The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Major Renewal for Two More Seasons.
During the fall season, Adult Swim welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often marked by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about following this endearing family navigate their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to evolve comedy past its current cynical streak. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well be part of that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to enjoy the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
